About the Item
A luminist and very atmospheric wintery landscape by Jacobus (Jaap) Doeser (Utrecht 1894 - Heemstede 1979). It's a large oil on cotton and done in very thick paint, signed in right lower corner (J.J. Doeser).
What's especially striking about the picture, is that the trees really seem to bow and rock under the weight of the snow. The further one stands away from it, the more depth in perspective and the more vivid the colours become. It's estimated 1920-1930s.
Doeser lived quite a secluded, modest life and didn't seek attention but built an extensive oeuvre with mainly colourful scenes and landscapes. started to get more recognition when his painting 'A still life with white lilies' sold very well at Christies in 2001.
Short Biography:
In the 1910s Doeser came into contact with Piet Mondriaan and other 'ideaists', artists who depicted the forms of reality, but with a search for innovation and originality, going strongly against the tradional use of colours and techniques. As can be recognized in this painting which is mostly in purple and yellow. Some early work by Mondriaan show the same kind of use of bright luminist colours. Doeser was also greatly influenced by Van Gogh.
This work was most probably painted on one of his travels, maybe Switzerland or in Germany, where Doeser lived in the 1920s. It has very thick paint. The painting is completely cleaned and professionally restored by Atelier Ferwerda, Ede, Netherlands. We've added a ''before and after'' of the restoration.
The frame is the original.
The piece will be professionally custom crated for shipment.
