A beautifully composed and sensitively rendered 19th-century English oil painting by Mark William Langlois, depicting a tranquil rural scene. Four children are gathered attentively around a saucer, watching a kitten drink milk — a charming tableau capturing the innocence and domestic warmth of Victorian life.
Langlois was a Surrey-born painter known for his genre subjects, landscapes, and still lifes, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in the 1860s and 70s. His works display a finely tuned sense of light and composition, and this signed and dated 1879 example is a particularly evocative instance of his mature style.
The painting is signed and dated M.W. Langlois 1879 lower left. It is presented in its original carved and gilded Victorian frame with a titled brass nameplate.
