Measures: 20”x30” framed oil on canvas painting of yacht racing in Antigua Race Week. Mary Rose, A 64.5 foot yacht designed by Nathaniel G. Herreschoff an American naval architect, mechanical engineer, and yacht design innovator in 1925. The painting captures Mary Rose on a port beat with the crew on the rail heading for the windward mark in the 2014 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Regatta background, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. One of the most renowned Classic Races world-wide, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta takes place every April, just before Antigua Sailing Week and is hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club. The day before the official start of the Yacht Regatta is the Concours d’Elegance, an opportunity for owners and crew to show off the care and attention they give to their yacht, with prizes for both privately and professionally maintained yachts. Judging takes place in the morning, where the beauty and spectacle of over 50 Classic yachts moored at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina is a truly magnificent sight. There is also a unique and challenging single handed race in the afternoon where yachts of up to 120ft compete against each other. Thomas N. Graves, a Fairfield County Conn. marine artist has been capturing the essence of the sea for over 40 years. Raised in Santa Barbara, California within walking distance of Hendry's Beach, he would spend hours watching the endless forms the waves created as they rose up and broke cascading their white foam. He is an experienced sailor who currently races and cruises his 35 foot sailboat, Bad Dog on Long Island Sound. He has participated in many “distant” races including a leg from Bermuda to Montauk. Tom says, “There is no better feeling on earth than being on the boat watching, hearing and feeling the bow digging into a wave, separating the water, watching it slide down the side of the boat and having it leave a marvelous wake astern.”.
