Newly Discovered Pair of 1920s Cubist Frescoes by Eyre de Lanux
Located in New York, NY
Eyre de Lanux (1894-1996) hailed from a prominent Philadelphia family, and studied painting in New York under Robert Henri. After marrying a French diplomat at the end of the First World War, she moved to Paris, and became an apprentice to the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. A talented painter and sculptor, Lanux specialized in what she called fresco paintings, which she showed in Paris and New York at the galleries of Peggy Guggenheim and Alexander Iolas. Fresco, however, is a misnomer since they are painted in wet plaster, and hers were incised and sculpted in a wet concrete-like mixture that she painted when dry. The lines incised in this pair of panels from the 1920s are similar to those chiseled in stone by Brancusi, but the Cubist compositions were inspired by her friend Pablo Picasso, who. One of these still lives depicts a bottle of Gordon’s Gin, a martini glass with an olive, a pipe, a smoldering cigar, an ace of diamonds, an Ionic capital, stars, a mask, and what looks like a newspaper. The other depicts a bottle of VO Whisky, a seltzer bottle, a cut-glass tumbler, a lemon for a twist, an ace of hearts, dice, and a ukulele, on a background of books. They belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Simpson of New York, a Social Register couple who collected art by Modigliani, Picasso, Matisse, de Chirico, and Miró. Around 1927 they asked Lanux to decorate their Paris pied-a-terre. She painted the dining room terracotta, designed a table with a terracotta top, bought chairs from Jean-Michel Frank, and collaborated on a rug design with the weaver Evelyn Wyld...
