Stunning example of an early rare oval Miniature Portrait Watercolour on paper within a finely chased Ormolu surround by English Artist Arthur James Melhuish (1824-1925) depicts
Portrait of Thomas Nettleship Staley (1823-1898) a British Bishop of the Church of England and the first Anglican bishop of the Church.
Beautiful item enclosed within its original tooled leather case, complete with its working brass clasp.
Condition: Superb condition with no losses, no evidence of repairs, Painting is clean and fresh with no foxing. Some light staining inside on silk lined areas.
Height: (entire overall as shown) 5.75” (14.5cm). Width: 4.75” (12cm). Depth: 1” (2.5cm).

Arthur James Melhuish 1829-1895 Artist and Photographer
In 1854 Arthur Melhuish patented a roll-back for waxed paper, and he demonstrated the device to Prince Albert in 1856. He became Honorary Secretary to the Amateur Photographic Association, formed in 1861, which had the Prince of Wales as President. He worked with various other photographers in several partnerships. In 1873 he was created Photographer Royal to the Shah of Persia following his visit to London during that year.
