"Mise-en-carte" Gouache Painting on Paper
About the Item
A hand-painted ‘mise-en-carte’ or point paper. This was the template used to create a woven textile. The pattern features a colorful array of pink and blue flowers on scrolling green and yellow vines. The pattern can be seen traced in pencil outside of the painted area. This example is now float mounted on a silk mat so you can see the full margins and framed behind UV protective plexiglass. There is a horizontal crease where the sheet was once folded in half. Other examples of point papers can be found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. Framed size is 20.75" x 26.5". Sheet size is 21.25" x 15.5".
