About the Item

Characterized by almost a singular focus on gray, Goldstein introduces a broad spectrum of variation in the hue, saturation and material composition throughout the space of the canvas. The centre of the image is a distinct border from which deep bursts of color spring forth in the mixed media of the lower layers. The magic of Goldstein's work is her ability to introduce a rich palette of material, texture and color in a chaotic manner while clearly bringing an order and definition that unpacks slowly. The back of the painting is titled in her typical charcoal scrawl “H2O“, is stamped by the estate and is also inscribed on the back in the lower right corner “W.F. SCOT”. We acquired this work directly from her estate, so while unsigned it is undoubtedly executed by Gladys Goldstein (and retains the estate’s label ve rso). Gladys Goldstein Biography For more than 6 decades, Gladys Goldstein pioneered and created a comprehensive body of work inspired by nature, the complexity of light and color, and the unlimited boundaries of geometric forms. Born Gladys V. Hack in 1918, Goldstein moved with her family to Baltimore before she was age two, was educated in art from the age of nine through high school at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and had her first art exhibition at age 12. Her father, Samuel Hack, had founded a newspaper in Ohio with Warren G. Harding before Harding became president of the United States. After her marriage to Edward H. Goldstein, the couple built a home and studio in the early 1940s in Baltimore, MD in the Mount Washington area. Goldstein was an art instructor at the Forest Park Evening Center in Baltimore, Maryland (1955-1960), at the Metropolitan School of Art in the late 1950s, at the Maryland Institute College of Art (1960-1964), the Jewish Community Center and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (1964-1975). She was an active member of Artists' Equity, the Painters' Seminar and the art group of the National League of American Penwomen, who awarded Goldstein “Best in Show“ in a biennial exhibition held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Measurements: 38 1/8“ W x 26 11/16“ H x 1 1/4“ D (no frame) Provenance: acquired at auction from the estate of Gladys Goldstein shortly after her death; the work retains a paper label from the estate noting authorization for the work. Condition report: Exceptional condition - no noteworthy flaws.
