About the Item
Born in Lisbon in 1881, Francis Smith was a French-Portuguese painter of English parentage, who lived in Paris from 1907. He took part in several exhibitions in Portugal, the free exhibitions of 1911 and 1916 at the Galerie des Arts, and the 1925 Salon d'Automne. In around 1930, he married sculptress Yvonne Mortier and became a French citizen. From 1935, he devoted himself to his career in France, where he enjoyed uninterrupted success, although Portugal remained one of his favourite subjects.
