    Located in Milan, IT
Late 17th century, Venetian School Allegory Oil on canvas, measures:cm 107 x 148 This plastic group of three figures seems to offer a representation of the Allegory of Charity, the main among the theological Virtues. Both the subject and the composition with the young and prosperous female figure surrounded by children, one of whom with the head close to her breast (as if asleep after breastfeeding), suggest this identification, although enigmatic is the figure of the little child turned from his back. The iconographic solution corresponds to the most widespread type of charity in the seventeenth and eighteenth century painting...

  • 17th Century Landscape Roman School Painting Oil on Canvas
    Located in Milan, IT
Roman school, 17th century Landscape with Figures Oil on canvas, 95.5 x 133 cm Frame 111 x 148 cm The canvas, of large rectangular format, portrays a large glimpse of lush and bucolic landscape, probably of the Roman countryside or the Agro, crossed by a watercourse (plausibly Tiber, Aniene or Almone), which ideally divides the canvas. The work is to be referred to the hand of a painter trained on the examples of the great 17th-century Roman Baroque landscape, which sees its roots first in the paradigmatic passages of landscapes such as the Lunette Aldobrandini by Annibale Carracci, then in the works of Lorrain (Claude Gellée), Nicolas Poussin and Gaspar Dughet. If in the past, therefore, the landscape was considered the scenographic background on which to project the representation of divine or human characters, in the seventeenth century it became an autonomous and codified pictorial genre. With Carracci the so-called ideal landscape is born: a mental reconstruction of a peaceful and harmonious nature in which the dream of perfect communion with man is realized. In the wake of Hannibal, as mentioned, during the seventeenth century the “Classic” Roman landscape experienced a long and happy season thanks to artists such as Domenichino, and the French Claude...

In this painting Saint Jerome (347-420) is presented in careful meditation, most likely intent in one of the works that made it proverbial, or the translation of the Bible into Latin.
