About the Item

Large oil painting that measures 7'x 5.5'. Extemporaneous Venitian Mannerist Jungian Mythological Composition. Robert Wymer is a an artist and sculptor who was born and raised in San Antonio. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelors degree in Fine Arts. Robert is a third generation artist and gets some of his inspiration from his grandfather who was prolific in studying color and works from artists such as Matisse and Rouault. Robert currently lives in South Austin and explores allegory, pattern studies, and plain air landscapes in his paintings. Robert says his work is “pictorial and illustrative, but also contradictory. It represents how my mind reacts to current culture.” He adds, “It is decorative, but aspires to intellectual weightiness.” He likes to demonstrate duality in his paintings, for example, showing the tension of technology and the bravado it can inspire. Story of the painting as told by the artist: The young shepherd is protective and possessive of his sheep. He sees an invader in the landscape, perhaps a dragon, a devil, or something more. In Jungian terms perhaps it is his anima, or the female component of his psyche. Regardless of its origin or properties, or whether the shepherd generates it internally or perceives it as an external being, one thing is certain: it is an element of chaos. The sky god riding his chariot and wearing his priestly robes, evocative of St Nicholas, comes after the dragon. Is he throwing a lightning bolt at the dragon or whipping Pegasus? Both intentions are aligned: tame a magical beast and fight a dragon. The domestication of animals serves to command and profit from the natural world (domesticated orange trees for the same purpose). In order to influence natural forces beyond our control, we appeal to God, or to various gods; or, in this case, to the chariot sky god. When domesticating livestock the males are often culled. They provide no milk. Their testosterone makes their flesh less palatable; they fight with each other and we need only one bull to many cows. The bull because he is unwieldy in some respects carries an aspect of the dragon. He is a necessary figure containing virility and potential violence. The figures circle from a stormy landscape into a stage with curtains. They break into a different space as the water does in a cascade from one type of artifice into another. The stage reminds us of the space between signifier and signified. We apprehend the natural world through artifice and imagination. We think with icons and apply taxonomies to the things we perceive. An evolving process over time modifies our beliefs and choices. From bronze age mythologies Hebrew monotheism brings a thought revolution which leads to the Christian branch of mythological invention. Enlightenment era reason and science take us even further away from bronze age religions, yet only in our prefrontal cortex it seems because monsters and gods still live in our unconscious minds. Life’s meaning comes in part through our inventions and we should be careful about the stages we create with our thoughts and actions. Some of our inventions have great utility but context is important and it is worth noting that the dragon is our invention and we are often the authors of our own chaos. Our creations might be involuntarily generated. They are worth exploring or, in this case painting. Since this work is an anachronistic rendering in the style of an Italian mannerist painting Venetian columns are shown inundated by waters which issue from the primordial landscape at the top perhaps describing the passage of human thought and invention through the ages. The potentially uncomfortable outcome of our mental work is suggested by the final effect of water. Thought is water in this painting and we might drown in our own thought creations.
