About the Item

In antique-painted glass the measures of this painting are totally exceptional. Painting on glass depicting Perseus, aided by two angels, freeing Andromeda, which was tied to a rock for the monster to attack and let free people. Wooden frame, cassetta type abocelado and edge decorated with string drives. Reproduction of Rubens painting exhibited at the Prado Museum. This painting was commissioned to Rubens by King Philip IV in 1639. It was one of the last works painted by the great Flemish master, who, regretting having already advanced it, died the following year without being able to conclude it. The final finish ran a load of Jacobo Jordaens, and did so in a way so masterful that only his intervention can be recognized. Rubens represents in this splendid canvas the mythological fable of Andrómeda and Perseo. The mother of Andromeda, Cassiopeia, has been boasted of being more beautiful than the Nereids, the daughters of the god of the Nereo sea. These, outraged by the affront, asked for help from the most powerful water god, Poseidon, who sent a fearsome dragon that sowed terror throughout the region. Consulted the oracle by the king and the father of Andromeda, this revealed that the only form to appease the monster was the one of the hand in the sacrifice to his beautiful daughter. So, pressed by his subjects, he was forced to leave her stranded on the cliffs of a cliff. Perseus, returning to his homeland after one of his many exploits, saw an andromeda abandoned to his fate and fell in love with her. He promised his parents to save immediately and to grant marriage. Given his consent, he killed the dragon and freed the princess. Rubens chose for this representation the moment in which Perseus, dressed in an armor in the Spanish fashion of the moment, proceeded to an Andromeda of the ligaduras that strikes the wreck. In the bottom left of the canvas It emphasizes the shield of the hero decorated with the head of the medusa crowned of serpents. The dark armor of Perseus contrasts admirably with the pearly white of the girl's body. The two winged children represented in the upper part of the composition are a direct allusion to the love between the two protagonists. One of them, perhaps Cupid, seems to invite them to dialogue with his gesture; Behind him is the figure of Hymenaeus, the protector god of marriage, carrying a torch, which is, along with the wreath, one of its specific attributes. In the background, the sea is seen with the wounded dragon; And on the beach, like a patch of white light, the winged horse Pegasus. The pagan fable of Andromeda and Perseus finds its parallel with the Christian narration of "St. George and the Dragon." In both, a knight kills a dragon to free a princess. The painting was registered for the first time in 1686 in the "Hall of Mirrors" of the Alcázar of Madrid. In 1746 he was in the Buen Retiro Palace. In 1796 she was deposited, along with the other nude paintings of the Royal Collection, in the so-called "Reserved Rooms" of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where she remained until 1827, the date of her definitive admission to the Prado Museum.
