Laureano Barrau Buñol (Barcelona 1864 - Santa Eulària des Riu, Ibiza, 1957) Laureano Barrau Buñol was born into a wealthy family, he was the son of an Industrial engineer and businessman. His training began at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, as a student of Antonio Caba. Shortly after, he moved to Madrid to continue and expand his training. In 1884 he traveled to Rome to study for three years thanks to a Fortuny Pension granted by the Barcelona City Council. However, with this scholarship he decides to go to Paris and enters the Academy of Fine Arts, having Jean-Leon Gérôme as a tutor. The following year, in 1885, he found himself studying the great Italian masters in Rome while sending works to Barcelona. Since 1887 he has exhibited in one of the most important Spanish galleries of the moment, the Sala Parés in Barcelona. In this year, his painting, The Surrender of Gerona, was very successful since it represented a personal treatment of the genre of history painting. In addition, Barrau frequently participated in official exhibitions, both national and international. In 1888 he was awarded a second medal at the Barcelona International Exposition and a second prize at the Brussels Universal Exposition. In 1891, he got the title of member of the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a year later, for his work Weeder, he obtained a third medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. At the same exhibition in 1904, he obtained a second medal for Stoppers from Ampurdán. Barrau has numerous individual exhibitions as well as taking part in collective ones in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Rome. In 1909 he moved to Buenos Aires maintaining the success and recognition he had in Spain and Europe. In 1929 he was named Societarie des Salons de Paris. He is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, the Getty Museum in California, the Museums of Contemporary Art in Madrid and Barcelona, in his house-museum in Sata Eulària des Riu and in different museums in Paris, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro. ; as well as in prominent private collections nationally and internationally. Barrau's style starts from an initial language closely related to his neoclassical training, but it will evolve until it reaches a new concept that is characterized by luminosity and chromatic transparencies. In this work the entire formation of the artist is evident. He captures with enormous realism the atmosphere typical of a sunset, where the sky is dyed in different warm colors, which prelude the subsequent darkness. The color, as well as the horizon, the two lonely trees and the moon, creates a melancholic atmosphere. This melancholy is typical of the Catalan painters of the late 19th Century. It is an exquisite piece. Signed in the lower right corner. It has a patch on the back. freshly framed Measurements: 90 x 63 cm (without frame); 100 x 73 cm (with frame).
