About the Item
ANTIQUE VICTORIAN HUSBAND AND WIFE PORTRAITS
Depicting Sir Courtenay Edmund Boyle KCB (1845-1901) and Lady Muriel Sarah Boyle (née Campbell) (1846-1934).
Sir Courtenay was a first-class cricketer and a prominent civil servant, Lady Muriel was the daughter of the politician John Campbell, 2nd Earl Cawdor.
Painted in an almost Pre-Raphaelite style very much in the Aesthetic Movement taste, especially Lady Muriel with strawberry blond plaited hair, a lace shawl and holding a Japanese fan standing in front of a house plant and opulent gold damask wall coverings. Sir Courtenay is stood confidently with arms folded in a black velvet jacket and sporting an impressive beard very much suitable for a cricketer of the period.
The artist is unknown but the male portrait is monogrammed ‘A.D.’ and dated ‘1880’ to the lower right.
Framed and glazed in later, yet complimentary good quality parcel-gilt and ebonised frames.
The paintings appear to be in good vintage condition with only minimal wear and no significant damage. The frames are also in very good order with some minor wear/losses but no serious issues.
Each one measures 70cm x 62cm x 4cm overall.
