Rosa Bonheur (born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur; March 16, 1822 – May 25, 1899) was a renowned French artist celebrated for her animal paintings. She also created sculptures in a realistic style.
Her most notable works include "Ploughing in the Nivernais," first showcased at the Paris Salon in 1848 and now housed in the Musée d'Orsay, and "The Horse Fair," exhibited at the Salon of 1853 and currently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Bonheur was widely regarded as the most famous female painter of the 19th century.
Charles Ferdinand Ceramano was born in 1831 in Tielt, Belgium. Lively depicted animal pieces were typical motifs and styles of the painter. Ceramano was a student in Eugène Verboeckhoven's studio in Brussels from 1849 and went to Barbizon in 1872 to work in the studio of Narcisso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña. In Barbizon and Paris he used his pseudonym "Ceramano" to paint landscapes with flocks of sheep and sheep in the stable.
