Pair of Oil Paintings of Classical Maidens by Lady Alma-Tadema, 19th Century

About the Item

This very fine pair of paintings is a somewhat typical subject for Laura Alma-Tadema, who preferred to paint in the style of the 17th Century Dutch Masters. Wife of the painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, she was a well regarded artist with a large body of work behind her; she exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1873, in 1881 at the Paris Salon and was awarded gold-medal for her entry of Satisfied in Berlin. The paintings are handled with a very fine level of detail, capturing two distinctly different ladies: the first a rather reserved maiden, carefully dressed and quite proper in a wooded garden with an instrument in hand; the second captures the more wild and free spirit of a rural maiden with her diaphanous dress furling in the wind, a basket full of freshly picked grapes balanced on her shoulder as she walks barefoot through the fields. Both are executed on panel and retain an early label from a gallery sale during the 20th century. Literature: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. I, Gründ, p. 341 Measurements: 7 1/4" W x 14 5/8" H [frame]; 4 1/2" W x 12" H [panel] Condition Report: FIRST: losses to frame (right side), old repaired cracks to frame; surface with loss and abrasions low-mid quadrant beneath instrument and in dress; light loss above signature. Under UV in apparently untouched condition. SECOND: Loss to upper left corner of frame, small loss to left-middle of frame, other repairs to frame; surface in excellent condition, appearing to be untouched under UV. BOTH: could benefit from a cleaning; frames appear to be original.
