About the Item

An oil on canvas painting of an Indian Campsite by Peter Rindisbacher, 1821. Depicting Mi'Kmaq Indians along a river and hunting in canoes. Interestingly, the subject is not from direct observation but assembled from elements recorded and described, forming a charming yet unrealistic composition that is very unlike Rindisbacher's observational works. Executed in Rindisbacher's characteristic folkish style, with careful attention to detail, this work may very well be the largest by Rindisbacher, it is exceptionally large, suggesting it was painted in a particular setting when he had better access to materials and space. The characters in the picture display the similar and repetitive faces Rindisbacher would use in his smaller human depictions, nevertheless, he focused on the details of a storyteller preoccupied with what he anticipated would be to the interest of his public, the Europeans curious about life on the frontier. Rindisbacher preferred to precisely show the customs and dresses of the indigenous peoples he encountered in his travels. Even the landscape takes a secondary importance, almost so as to not distract us from the main subject. Signed and dated lower left, P. Rindisbacher 1821. The prior owner of the painting had hired New York Art Forensics to conduct a report on the work listed for sale to authenticate it through analysis consisting of research and extensive scientific methods. The 56 page report can be made available to serious interested parties.

Repaired: Infrared imaging reveals some generally minor areas of restoration, please refer to pictures detailing the analysis. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Paint flakes/losses, craquelure, relined and with at least a couple areas of restoration. It appears there were two times that the painting was restored, fortunately care was taken to restore only the areas that required it (least amount required).
