"Port View" by Frederick Conway

About the Item

Oil on artist panel by Frederick Conway. Unsigned, but this painting came directly from the collection from the Estate of Joan Conway Crancer. It measures 22.75" x 26.75" including the frame. A member of the faculty of the Washington University Art School from 1929 to 1970, Frederick Conway was a painter, educator, and lecturer. When Max Beckmann was in residence at Washington University, Conway and he became close associates. Conway was one of the first to realize the importance and seriousness of Beckmann's teaching, and Beckmann painted Conway's portrait in 1949. He was born in Saint Louis, Missouri and studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts and in Paris at the Academie Julian, the Academy Moderne, and the Academy grande Chaumiere. He has done murals for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and exhibited widely including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC.

Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn.
