About the Item

Giacomo Francesco Cipper was born in Austria in Feldkirch. We do not know when he moved to Italy, but in 1696 we find him residing in Milan in the Carcano house in the parish of S. Vito al Pasquirolo, where on October 17 of that year he marries the daughter of a notary in the neighborhood, Giulia Francesca Galdone. In the last thirty years the artist's catalog has been greatly enriched and his stylistic path appears today sufficiently outlined. His first signed and dated work, still life with a plate of cherries, a plate of figs, cheeses, celery and chalice, in a private collection in Como, dates back to 1700, while the Gypsy scene, with the two boys playing cards, already in the Geri collection, it is dated 1705. This has led Caprara himself to hypothesize that Todeschini's youthful production was made above all of still lifes and that only afterwards, after his arrival in Italy, he dedicated himself to the painting of genre scenes , for which today it is above all famous. Often chromatically bright and set in the open air his works of the first decade, Todeschini will fall back more and more in the following years towards indoor compositions less uneven in color, but always in theatrical tone and redesign. On the basis of the major in-depth analyzes of his work, Alessandro Morandotti (The Still Life in Italy, Milan, Electa, 1989, Volume I, page 288) traces his repertoire of eating peasants, gypsy scenes, card players or morra, concerts, music lessons, fish sellers, and his "incarnates boldly resolved with brown tones just lit by blows of red and white" at the lesson of the Danish painter Eberhard Keil, called Monsù Bernardo (1624 - 1687), lived in Rome in the second half of the seventeenth century and that between Rome and Naples he drew most of the motifs of his genre scenes. Unlike, however, the other painters of genre scenes of the seventeenth century, like many Caravaggeschi, but also of the eighteenth (think, for example, Ceruti), and despite his undoubted technical virtuosity, Todeschini carefully banned from his painting every pensive or melancholic attitude and every psychological and social intent, always maintaining, by personal character and, perhaps, for the taste of its clientele, within a smiling and easy humor, even when this contradicts the theme of the painting itself. Painting oil on canvas depicting a poor man called pitocco (meaning humble man) with dimensions of 48 x 35 without frame and 60 x 47 with frame. Typical example of the painting of Cipper Todeschini, this representation of a poor man with dug teeth and sweaty vestici, but despite this can give us joy thanks to a sense of humility and benevolence that our painter always infused in his characters represented.
