Portrait of a young woman, attributed to Natale Schiavoni Oil on canvas Epoch: 1840 Size: 86x118 cm with frame, 58x90 cm canvas only Condition: Very good condition Description: The present painting datable around 1840 is characterized by the meticulous and delicate color score that enhances, in the contrasting bright tones, the freshness of the model's complexion. The portrait is among the group of works typically representative of Natale Schiavoni's taste, with young, beautiful women posing with winking, enraptured eyes. Born in Chioggia on April 25, 1777, Natale Schiavoni perfected himself, as a very young self-taught artist, in drawing and engraving. In 1792 he moved to Venice where he stayed until 1797, attending the Accademia for three years under Francesco Maggiotto. After the fall of the Serenissima, he moved to Trieste achieving considerable success as a miniaturist among the wealthy bourgeoisie. In 1805 he moved to Milan, entering into friendly relations with Gaetano Monti, Andrea Appiani, Giuseppe Bossi and Giuseppe Longhi, who helped him perfect his engraving technique. After the fall of Napoleon, he moved to Vienna in 1816, at the urging of Emperor Francis I, as court portrait painter. He returned to Venice in 1823, devoting himself to oil painting and executing a large number of portraits, especially nudes and female half-figures, which earned him the nickname "painter of the Graces."
