Kellogg & Comstock SHEPHERDESS OF THE ALPS original Kellogg & Comstock hand-colored lithograph, Published by D. Needham (American, 1808 - 1888). Circa. 1848-1850. image: 12 in x 8 1/2 in; 30.48 cm x 21.59 cm. overall: 15 in x 11 in; 38 cm x 28 cm. Strong and clear impression, overall very good condition, paper has a light oxidation and restored small tear middle left side Framed, no glazing This hand colored print is of a young girl and two goats standing near a stream in a forested area. The girl is wearing a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves and long stockings. She is feeding a goat with flowers and grass from her apron. The original "Shepherdess of the Alps" appears to have been a play by Marmontel, which enjoyed great popularity in France, England, and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An exquisite example of this artist's traditional take on still-life realism, and a masterpiece in its own rite. This floral painting represents the artist's awe for botanical and floral scenes as well as his or her adept knowledge of tactile painting. With broad sweeping strokes and high texture, the artist paints a portrait of a small circular Ombre deep blue vase, filled with creamy white ranunculus or buttercups with berry color centers, green eucalyptus and small accents of white hydrangea. "Vintage 1989 expressionist watercolor portrait of Robert Shiffler by Paul Melia. / BIO: Paul Melia (b. 1929 - d. 2019) has been a professional illustrator and painter since 1955. When asked the inevitable question concerning the beginning of his interest in art he recalls an early childhood incident. ""When I was 5 years old, I got hit by a car. My injuries were severe and I was bedridden for quite some time. But that accident was just the beginning of my health problems. I also developed life-threatening asthma. It was during my convalescence that I began to draw as I couldn't do much of anything else. I learned an important lesson as I struggled to recover: my weaknesses became my strength."" Paul had little art training as a child but when he was a sophomore in high school, he had a wonderful art teacher. Paul won a scholarship to the Dayton Art Institute (Dayton, OH) and graduated from the school with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He worked in Dayton as an illustrator for HH Art Studios.
