Purvis Young (1943-2010) "Sailing to Freedom" Painting, 1999 Includes signed COA document from Patrick T. and Just A. Parker indicating the painting was acquired directly from the artist. Framed in a white frame with glass. Patrick and Judy Parker comments on his obituary in 2010 - Purvis was once referred to as the "Picasso of the Ghetto", and in his own right he was a "Picasso" but not of the ghetto. He was one of the first "green" artists, as he would only paint on wood, fabric, doors or any other "recycled" material that friends and neighbors brought to him. He was so original in every aspect of his art, that no one knew how to categorize him... folk artist, urban artist, outsider artist.. in reality he was a CONTEMPORARY MASTER!! We were so lucky to have gotten to know and admire him. He was a shy and gentle loving soul. His art has filled our lives and hearts and when looking at his art, you FEEL his art. You feel the hope for mankind in every painting. His Angels will always look over all of us, especially the ones of us lucky enough to own his art. We both thank God that we were part of his inner circle for a brief period of time! Rest in peace, Purvis... you will live on forever through your art, and the people who knew and loved you will talk about you forever as well. Purvis Young (February 4, 1943 – April 20, 2010) was an American artist of Bahamian descent. Young's work is celebrated at the museum and institutional level while also finding a home in many private collections as well, with a following that included Brice Marden, Jane Fonda, Damon Wayans, Jim Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and others. In 2006 a feature documentary titled Purvis of Overtown was produced about his life and work. His work is found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and others.
