About the Item

Randy Lee (White Horse, b. 1951) Untitled (Ceremonial Map with Rawhide Lacing), circa 1980s–1990s Mixed media on canvas with leather rawhide attachments, framed Canvas: 80 in. H × 62 in. W • Framed: 81 in. H × 63 in. W A monumental mixed-media work by Randy Lee (White Horse, b. 1951)—a contemporary Native American artist known for merging Plains pictography and modern abstraction. The composition evokes a sacred buffalo hide, its irregular parchment-like form suspended within a red and black field symbolizing earth and spirit. Across the surface, White Horse layers imagery of teepees, warriors, buffalo silhouettes, and handprints, interwoven with abstract glyphs and splattered pigment suggestive of ritual energy. A central horizontal band—reminiscent of a medicine wheel or decorated pipe stem—anchors the composition, uniting physical and spiritual realms. Genuine leather rawhide lacing descends from the canvas, reinforcing its ceremonial quality and direct reference to traditional hide painting. The dripped and gestural paintwork connects the piece to Abstract Expressionist action painting, yet the narrative content remains distinctly Indigenous and symbolic. Presented in a deep red frame complementing the earthen tones. A powerful large-scale statement piece suitable for collectors of Native Modernism, tribal symbolism, or mixed-media abstraction.
