Robert Gardelle was born in a family of the Geneva bourgeoisie, he was the second of four brothers and nicknamed "the Young" to distinguish it from his brother Daniel, "the elder" (October 2, 1679 - October 9, 1753), miniaturist painter who was established in England.
Gardelle showed talent from an early age. He travelled to Kassel with Baron Mardfeld, who became his protector and later sent him to Berlin. 17 12 he returned to Geneva after having made various portraits including one of Frederic II, The landgrave of Hesse-Cassel. To educate himself further he went to Paris and became a pupil of Largillierre. After 1713 and back in Geneva he specialized in portraits and attracted a large clientele. At age seventy-two in 1754, he made a portrait of the famous Rococo philosopher Rousseau.
