About the Item

A beautiful and decorative, oil on panel in its original giltwood frame, a still life The Blue Iris Bouquet, with a straw hat, and watering can, on a marble ledge. Our painting is signed on a lower left by Philippe Rousseau, a label Number 27 indeed is the exhibition number during The French Artists Show. In the back the stamp in the Philippe Rousseau's red wax. Much quality in this fine painting of this French 19th century Master, kept in of prestigious Museum, circa 1850-1880. Biography : Philippe Rousseau, born on February 22nd, 1816 in Paris, and died on December 5th, 1887 to Acquigny, is a French painter. Philippe Rousseau is the pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros and Jean-Victor Bertin to the Fine Arts School of Paris. He begins as landscape painter, then paints still lives and animal subjects. He exposes to the Show from 1834. He obtains a third class medal in 1845, a second class medal in 1855, and a first class medal in 1848. In the 1845 Show, Charles Baudelaire writes on his picture The Rat of cities and rat of fields: This painting is beautiful and of a charming aspect. All the tones are at the same time as a great freshness and a significant wealth. It is to make still lives, freely, in landscape painter, in painter of a kind, in a man of wit, and not in a worker, as MM. Of Lyon. The small rats are lovely. In the chapter on the landscape: Philippe Rousseau among whom each often noticed paintings full of colors and brightness, is in serious progress. It was an excellent painter, it is true, but now he looks at the nature with more attention and applies to return faces. I saw recently, at Durand-Ruel Galery, Philippe Rousseau's ducks which were of wonderful beauty, and which had well the customs and the gestures of ducks. In 1859, he decorated the dining room of Albe's hotel. Rousseau is awarded Chevalier in French Legion d’Honneur in 1852 and promoted to Officer in the French Legion d’Honneur in 1870.
