This 18th century Italian School painting depicts Saint Paul of Tarsus — also known as the Apostle Paul or Apostle of the Gentiles — rendered in oil on copper with deep intensity and Baroque influence. This religious painting highlights the Apostle’s expression and invites reflection on the virtues of conviction, sacrifice, and unwavering belief. The copper surface is typical from the 18th century, which gives the artwork a unique luminosity. This composition is rich with symbolism: - The sword in Saint Paul's hand symbolizes the way he was killed: decapitation. - The Red Cloak represents his Martyrdom under the persecution of Emperor Nero. - The book symbolizes his teachings and writings.
