Of equisite detail and realism, this small oil painting on panel captures a young woman standing beside a domed wire cage from which she has just brought out her yellow canary. The scene is perfectly executed with gorgeous rendering of her skin tones and shadowing of details, layering of her garment and capturing the complexity of the turned-bob baluster on the side table. Inside the brown lower border of the wall is the red script signature that apparently reads "A. Savini" and is dated 1874. The work is housed in an early giltwood frame with a velvet edging.
Alfonso Savini was born in Bologna in 1836 and exhibited in Turin, Florence, Bologna and Venice. He was tutor to his son, the painter Alfredo Savini (Italian, 1868-1924), who continued in his father’s footsteps to paint some rather fine works. Savini focused his career around portraits, genre scenes, paintings of flowers and still-life works; however, perhaps his most skilled works were his vibrant genre scenes, wherein he was particularly skilled in his composure of the setting to capture the personality of the figure and depth of the moment.
