About the Item

Paul-E´lie Gernez (1888-1948) painted female figures and nudes, still lifes and flowers, but a large part of his oeuvre consists of landscapes and marines. Gernez spent most of his life in Honfleur, on the French coast, where he could study the effect of the light on the water. He was also an illustrator, and worked in gouache, watercolor and pastel. His work is characterized by sensitivity coupled to a strong structure. He found Cubism an apt stylistic vehicle for his own expression, interpreting it in his own way as a Post-Cubist and finding in it confirmation of the basic classic rules, coining for himself the motto ‘Le cubisme me'ne a' la peinture a' condition d’en sortir’ – ‘Cubism leads towards painting on the condition that you abandon it one day’. Having gained a diploma in drawing, Gernez took up a teaching post at the Valenciennes lyceum. A vacancy brought him to Honfleur where he enjoyed the quiet life and where his profession allowed him to earn a living while also giving him the time to paint. In 1917, 1922 and 1924 he held solo exhibitions in Paris. In 1923 he was made a Chevalier of the Le´gion d’Honneur. Gernez illustrated Ge´nitrix by Franc¸ois Mauriac (1885-1970), winner of the Nobel Prize for literature (1952) and Le Chemin de paradis by the writer, poet and critic Charles Maurras (1868-1952).
