"Time and Civilization, " Newly Discovered Art Deco Mural Studies, Schreckengost
About the Item
Famed for his product designs in the 1940s and 1950s, and his Jazz Bowl commissioned by Eleanor Roosevelt, Victor Schreckengost was also a painter and sculptor over his long career. However, these studies for a pair of murals painted for one of his students, Ami Z. Wood has just come to light, and it demonstrates Schreckengost's facility for the kind of allegorical mural painting that was enormously popular in the Art Deco years. One mural is entitled "Time and Civilization," and it depicts Father Time with his scythe and hourglass, standing over the world's populations, with the Pyramids to the left and modern skyscrapers to the right. The other, entitled "Time," depicts an angelic figure pointing forward, perhaps urging the world to heal and move ahead after the destruction of World War II. Both murals were painted in a home in Avon Lake, Ohio. Both studies are signed, and are accompanied by a handwritten annotation by the owner's family. The medium is watercolor on paper. (Dimensions include matte and frame).
