About the Item
This beautiful hand painted floral still life is blossoming with meaning. In the Victorian-era floral arrangements were used as a means of communicating things that could not be said directly. This piece speaks in the language of flowers. The variegated tulips that crown the painting can be translated as “hopeless love”. This theme is reinforced by the rose, a symbol of passion, which has fallen from the bouquet and rests in the bottom left of the painting. The paintings are set in 'Japanned' frames, a popular technique of the age, which imitated Asian lacquer work.
