About the Item

Achille Vertunni ( Napoli 1826 - Roma 1897) View of Venice with the bell tower of the Basilica dei Frati Signed lower Right: A Vertunni He attended the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, under the guidance of Gabriele Smargiassi. It was influenced by the Posillipo School. At the biennial Bourbon exhibition in 1851 he was awarded ex aequo with the painter Nicola Palizzi and in 1853 he moved to Rome. His first themes were inspired by historical events, such as the portrait of Pia dei Tolomei, but he then devoted himself to the landscape which, from the seventies, became the almost exclusive subject of his paintings. Characteristic are its sunsets in the Roman Agro and in the Pontine Marshes, sometimes animated by cowherds and buffalo herds. He took part in the Vienna Exposition of 1873, in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1878 and in the International Exhibition of Rome in 1883. His works can be found at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Florence (Torrente near Narni), at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin (Paludi pontine, 1863), at the Art Gallery modern Milan (Paesaggio di Maccarese) and the Revoltella Museum in Trieste (Roman Camagna). The Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples owns the Campagna Romana canvas, 79.5x48 cm, purchased in 1904. Achille Vertunni, Venice Lagoon. In his mature age his Rome studio was a reference point for many Roman critics and artists, frequented by nobility and politicians of the time. Visitors of his atelier in Via Margutta, in Rome, where Achille Vertunni gave parties and banquets, were historical figures of the time, such as General Alfonso La Marmora, composer Liszt, Edward VII of England - when he was still Prince of Wales - together with his wife Alessandra of Denmark and the Danish royal family, characters of the Risorgimento and visitors of passage of the "Grand Tour". He died in Rome in 1897. The measurement shown is of the painting without frame. Italian Fine Arts Authority must check this item in order to allow its exportation. This process lasts about 60 days.
