About the Item

Willem Maris watercolor painting (Netherlands 1844-1910.) Willem was a Dutch painter born in the Hague on February 18, 1844 and died in the same city on October 10, 1910. Self-taught, he began working with his brothers Jacob and Matthijs, and then he established his studio in the Hague, where he lived most of his life except for some trips. It almost exclusively painted pictures of animals. His first apprenticeship was made very young with his brothers over, also painters. He temporarily attended the Academy of the Hague; There he met the painter of animals Pieter Stortenbeker, who guided him. However, his apprenticeship was completely self-taught. In 1862 he went to Oosterbeek, where he resided, Anton Mauve, with whom he established a deep friendship. That year he exhibited in Rotterdam cows in heathland, representative of what was thereafter subject main, also characteristic of other Dutch landscape painters of the time. In 1863 he presented in La Hague cows in a pond, where he paid important attention to light in game with fog under the influence of his brother Matthijs; This painting is characterized by the predominant employment of whites, greys and Greens. Matthijs and Jacob he opened a Studio in the Hague that same year. In 1865 it traveled by the Rhine River in the company of his friend Bernard Blommers, who, three years later, established his own Studio, also in the Hague. They used to go to the Mauritshuis to copy paintings. This period is jeans with donkeys (1865). In 1867 it was temporarily in Paris, where he lived by then Jacob; at that time he met some works by painters of the Barbizon school. Towards 1871 he traveled to Norway in visit to its fjords and mountains, but thereafter he lived almost without exception in the Hague or its surroundings. In 1876 he founded the Hollandsche Teeken-Maatschappij (Dutch painting society) with Anton Mauve and Hendrik Willem Mesdag. From the following decade it varied the color of his paintings, much warmer, though not the theme. He received some recognition international at the end of his life: thus, at the Universal exhibition of Paris of 1889 he was awarded a silver medal and in the 1900 participated as a member of the jury. One of his sons, Simon Willem Maris was also a painter. His disciple was George Hendrik Breitner and influenced the Constant Artz, Dutch, and Franz Gra¨ssel, German painting.
