About the Item

"Winter". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated. BUREAU, Pierre-Isidore. 1868. Rural landscape with an urban center in the background and some humble houses on one side that has two small figures towards the center of the composition (one with a bundle of firewood on her back, holding the other by the hand), the scene It is completed with some snowy fields and a sky with clouds in dark tones. Note the loose invoice, with a clear predominance of color and brushstrokes over the drawing. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left corner. In "Les Salons, dessins autographes: Exposition des beaux-arts, Paris, 1868: 160 pages de croquis originaux" (text by A. Pothey) of June 18, 1868, what appears to be a sketch of this painting appears published, given the slight differences between the two, entitled “Hiver” (Winter). Pierre Isidore Bureau (Paris, 1822-Parmain, 1876) was a painter about whom little is known for certain, but it must be noted that he trained with Jules Dupré (Barbizon school) and it should be noted that he participated with his work in the first two exhibitions considered Impressionists (four works in 1874, and eight in 1876), being part of the beginning of this artistic movement (contacts with Renoir and Sisley, etc.). Stylistically speaking, the experts are more or less in agreement in indicating that it is not a fully Impressionist master, but one that does use elements of Impressionism. He regularly showed his work at the Paris Salon between 1865 and 1876, was rejected in 1973 (showing his work at the Salon des Refusés), and most of his works feature landscapes (many done in the vicinity of L'Isle- Adam).
