About the Item
Oil on canvas depicting a beautiful young woman holding a mirror, a child playing on her shoulder, amusing himself by covering his blond hair with the young woman's jet-black hair, and playing with her pearl necklace.
In the background, behind the parapet of a balcony, hollyhocks.
Signed lower right "Ch.Muller".
A pupil of Coignet and Gros, he was a historical painter, genre painter, portraitist and decorator.
He won several medals at the 1834, 1838, 1846, 1848 and 1855 Salons.
He was a member of the admission committee for the 1878 World Exhibition.
65x50 cm unframed.
Another version of this painting was sold in London in 2005, but of different dimensions (112x88 cm ).
A significant Charles-Louis Müller collection acquired by the Louvre

05/14/21 - Acquisitions - Paris, Musée du Louvre - No less than seventy-seven preparatory drawings and two painted sketches for the Louvre décor by Charles-Louis Müller have just been acquired by the Musée du Louvre from Galerie De Bayser. This purchase reinforces the collection of works relating to the history of the Louvre (which, alas, is virtually no longer on display to visitors). This is the third group of works by Charles-Louis Müller to enter the Louvre. In 1990, the Société des amis du musée presented him with 64 preparatory sheets for the Salle des États and the Salon Denon. In 2007, a further 46 drawings were acquired from Éric Turquin, mainly relating to the décor of the Salon Denon (see news item 6/16/08).
