About the Item

A limited edition photograph of Jimi Hendrix by the noted photographer Mike Berkofsky. It is an edition of 40 along with another we are presenting. The story of the image is quite interesting. The photograph will be shipped rolled in a tube. 22 year old Mike Berkofsky was commissioned by the influential 1960s magazine ‘Rave’ to shoot Jimi Hendrix who was at the time twenty four. One of only a handful of photographers to capture him for a sitting portrait, Mike used a high quality Hasselblad medium format camera. Upon completion, the processed rolls of film from the shoot were handed over to the magazine and never returned, seemingly lost. Fortunately before processing, Mike visited the laboratory and requested a clip test to check the film exposures and kept possession of the test clipping. This clipping is the only surviving record from the shoot, but was misplaced and thought lost until recovered by Mike’s assistant in 2014 from a Los Angeles storage facility, where Mike had subsequently moved to and started his own production company. Here he lived and worked continuously for 20 years, specializing in fashion commercials and covers for all the top magazines. Unfortunately though the storage had been severely affected by the cataclysmic 1994 Northridge earthquake, causing moisture dam- age, which in turn led to fungus infestation. Determined to restore the negative, over a period of time it was carefully washed. Each wash revealing layers of bright color, imbuing the image with a new psychedelic vibrance. The Fungus image has never been in circulation. The restored version is on the latest album sleeve for "Both Sides of The Sky” This image also hangs in The National Portrait Gallery of London. These photographs are the culmination of decades of separation from lost work. All images are printed on Fuji crystal archive paper. They are signed and numbered.

Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) was a rock 'n' roll guitarist, singer, and songwriter known for his electric guitar skills and wild showmanship. His prolific guitar playing and exceptional songwriting abilities catapulted him to fame and influenced musicians in other genres including hard rock, funk, and grunge. One of his most legendary performances took place on stage at Woodstock Music Festival in 1969, where he debuted his electric rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
