Kanasuzu is an 18 year old maiko, an apprentice geisha. She is applying her makeup before getting dressed in the late afternoon for a day's work. She lives and trains and works at the well-known 'Minatoya' establishment at the Miyagawa-cho geisha district of the old city.

A beautiful photo, made my photographer Paul van Riel during one of his many trips to japan. Being a regular visitor in Japan, Van Riel has his own view on the amazing Japanese culture, capturing this through his lens.

For decades, Paul van Riel has been visiting Japan regularly. He does this on assignment for several magazines (National Geographic a.o.), companies (KLM and Japan Airlines), or for the production of photo albums or exhibitions.
His work has been showed at the Museum Volkenkunde (ethnology museum) and Japan Museum SieboldHuis, both in Leiden, the Netherlands. He also exhibited at Paris Photo and in several international galleries. His photos can also be found in many private collections.
