“Three Girls in Studio, Cairo” is a print of a Black and White photgraph by Youssef Nabil from 1993, hand-colored by the artist. Exhibition label at the verso states, that this print is number 2 of 3 in limited edition executed in 2000. The photograph depicts three models: Amani Mourad, Ehsan Saleh, and Sabrine El Hossamy. The print is encased in a white acrylic frame.
Youssef Nabil, born in Cairo in 1972, is a well-known contemporary Egyptian photographer who creates elaborately staged photographs that resemble the melodrama of 1950s Egyptian cinema. Hand coloring of photographic stills for posters and advertisements was a popular technique used during the heyday of Egyptian cinema.
In November 2023, Youssef Nabil has been named a “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters” by the French Ministry of Culture.
