Almir Mavignier Poster for Egon Schiele Show at the Ulm Museum

About the Item

Constructivist poster for an Egon Schiele exhibition held at the Ulm Museum from April 8-May 13, 1962. Designed by Brazilian/German visual artist, graphic designer, and pedagogue Almir da Silva Mavignier (1925-2018). After studying at the Ulm School under the constructivist Max Bill, Mavignier set up his own graphic design studio in Ulm, becoming involved with the experimental collective Group Zero in the fields of Concrete Art and Op Art. He is perhaps best known for his poster design, producing innovative work in the early 1960’s for the Ulm Museum and for Kurt Fried’s small but influential studio f,a pioneering venue that helped promote avant-garde artists from Group Zero, Gruppos N and T, and Nouve Tendenze. Mavignier’s visual art in this period was presented at a solo show at the Ulm Museum, at the Venice Biennale and at Documenta 3 and 4 (1964 and 1968). He served for decades as professor of painting at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Hamburg. And he is well represented at MoMA today with 22 items in the permanent collection. Custom metal frame with acrylic pane. In remarkably good original condition, the colors still bold and vibrant, the poster floating in the frame held only with a few archival hinges, courtesy of having been flat stored for six decades. The poster itself measures 33 in. x 23.5 in. See my other listings for additional Mavignier posters executed for the Ulm Museum or Studio f.
