Michael Mathias Prechtl, Cranach and Picasso, 1968
Vintage exhibition poster for Cranach and Picasso at the Albrect Durer Society in Nurnberg, 1968. This print was designed by Michael Mathias Prechtl and depicts artists Lucas the Elder Cranach (1472-1553) and Pablo Picasso with their arms around each other, the exhibition title and details written out to the print’s upper edge.

Michael Mathias Prechtl (1926–2003) was one of the most unique illustrators to publish regularly on The New York Times Op-Ed Page during the late 1960s and 1970s. Discovered by JC Suares, he symbolized the Albrecht Durer of his time. Known for his portraits of politicians, artists and public figures (from Richard Nixon to Idi Amin, Golda Meir and Charles Manson, Anton Chekhov to Buffalo Bill). His artistic practice was defined by a remarkable sense of patience, wit and absurdity. In addition, he frequently illustrated books for the Gutenberg Buchergilde as well as his own monographs of drawings, sketches and paintings.
Prechtl's Relation to Picasso
"Picasso Like many artists, looked to the history of art for inspiration. From the late 1940s-the early 1960s he focused with particular intensity on individual works by past masters, making variations in painting, drawing, sculpture, and prints." Cranach's inspiration can be traced, notably in such Picasso works as, "Portrait of a Woman after Cranach the Younger (1958)," and "David and Bathsheba, after Lucas Cranach," (1949). Source: MoMA

Victor Moscoso was among the most gifted and influential artists to emerge from the '60s counterculture, pioneering not only the psychedelic concert poster designs made famous during San Francisco's Summer of Love, but also making his mark in underground comix.
