'Easy Rider' Original Vintage Movie Poster, American, 1969

About the Item

A touchstone of the American counterculture movement, Dennis Hopper's 1969 revolutionary road drama 'Easy Rider' defined a generation of disillusioned youth, marking a turning point as the idealism of the 1960s began to sour. Director Hopper and producer Peter Fonda co-wrote the screenplay and co-starred as bikers Billy and Wyatt who hit the road with the proceeds of a successful cocaine deal, travelling through the American South from Los Angeles to New Orleans to the beat of a rock and roll soundtrack, navigating the societal tensions of the 1960s and meeting hippies, prostitutes and Jack Nicholson in a standout performance as drunken lawyer George along the way. The film and its self-indulgent filmmakers were notorious for using real drugs, predominantly marijuana, in a number of scenes. A blockbuster success, the film helped to usher in the New Hollywood era which saw the major studios financing a wave of low-budget pictures by new avant-garde directors. Featuring an illustrated profile of Peter Fonda on a bright yellow background, this striking Style C US One Sheet is a rare example from the original release that was printed on matte paper rather than the glossy paper that was more frequently used for movie posters from the late 1960s onwards. Although very similar to the Style A One Sheet, the Style C presents a stronger, less cluttered design with a smaller credits portion and larger image area, making it the most attractive American movie poster for this title. Conservation backed on linen. Backing and light colour touching have smoothed and diminished one vertical and three horizontal machine folds (as issued) and minor edge wear. Prior to backing the left margin was folded back by an eighth of an inch. Small black printer's ink smudge to yellow ground and some printer's ink residue to margins. Image and colours otherwise excellent.

'The Italian Job' Original Vintage Japanese B2 Movie Poster, 1969
Located in Devon, GB
An action-packed Japanese B2 poster for the 1969 British crime caper "The Italian Job," starring Michael Caine as cockney criminal Charlie Croker, fresh out of prison and planning a heist in Italy. Consistently voted one of the greatest ever British movies, the quintessential sixties film has become a cult favourite and a Classic of the heist genre, while Caine's famous one-liner "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" has taken on a life of its own. Despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best English-Language Foreign Film, "The Italian Job" was not a success in America at the time of its release. Caine blamed its failure on a misleading marketing Campaign, explaining to Empire magazine that the US poster "was a naked woman and me. And I said, 'This is for kids. There aren't any naked women in it! We're going to get a load of old guys coming in to see naked women and they're going to be pissed off, and mums aren't going to bring their children.' They said, 'We're not going to change the poster,' so I got on a plane and came home." While utilizing the same elements as the US poster in a more diminutive form, this superb Japanese poster places its focus on the real stars of the movie - the red, white and blue mini coopers...

Printed in stunning stone lithography, this scarce Australian Daybill poster joyfully declared the original Australian release of MGM's 'An American in Paris' as "the gayest, the most gorgeous, the greatest musical ever." Inspired by a 1928 orchestral composition by George Gershwin, the classic 1951 musical starred Gene Kelly as an American ex-GI who remains in Paris after the war to become an artist and falls for a gamine Parisienne played by a nineteen year old Leslie Caron, who Kelly had spotted performing with the Ballets des Champs-Élysées two years previously. Following the devastation and trauma of the Second World War, producer Arthur Freed...

Audrey Hepburn 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Original Movie Poster, Japanese, 1969
Located in Devon, GB
Candy colors combine to perfection with the adorable Audrey on this charming Japanese B2 poster for a 1969 re-release of the perennially popular 'Breakfast at Tiffany's.' Holly Golightly would be Audrey Hepburn’s defining role, establishing her status as one of the greatest screen legends and style icons of all time. It seems unbelievable now that Truman Capote, author of the novella on which the movie was based, had his heart set on Marilyn Monroe for the part. Monroe pulled out of the running when her acting coach advised her not to play 'a lady of the night...
