Francesco Nonni, real name Francesco Umberrio After studying at the School of Arts and Crafts directed by Antonio Berti. He began to work as a sculptor at the local Casalini Ebanisteria and he learned the techniques of wood engraving there and devoted himself to graphic decoration work. In 1906, he devoted himself to illustration and presented his woodcuts at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1910, in the Rome exhibition in 1911 and again in the Venice Biennials in 1912 and 1914. In 1915, he obtained the teaching diploma and began teaching activities at the Minardi drawing school in Faenza. Thanks to his notoriety, he participated in the most important Italian exhibitions such as the International Art Exhibition in Venice and the first International Art Exhibition in Rome in 1914 and in European exhibitions, until the break imposed by the triggering of the First World War. During the war, he fell prisoner and brought back a series of drawings on the prison camp in Germany, which he then gathered in the Cellelager album. The experience of captivity changes him profoundly. Back in civilian life, in 1919 he embarked on ceramics, an activity that he continued to develop, particularly between 1920 and 1925 with artistically very happy results. During this period, he collaborated with Anselmo Bucci with whom he created a work exhibited and awarded at the Paris Expo in 1925. In the decade from 1920 to 1930, he established himself as a successful representative of the Deco style. In 1927, he participated in the International Exhibition of Decorative Art ISIA in Monza, also organizing the exhibition for the Romagna section. From the thirties, he gradually abandoned his ceramic production, devoting himself mainly to oil painting. In the fifties, he devoted himself to inlaying on ivory. His hometown organized the exhibition “Francesco Nonni xylograph” at the municipal art gallery (December 2009-February 2010). In 2017, many of his works were exhibited in the Art Deco exhibitions held at the Museums of San Domenico in Forlì, the International Ceramics Museum in Faenza and the Museum of Saludecio and Beato Amato.
