Original vintage railway poster published by British Railways - Oxford Travel by Train - featuring artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963) depicting an aerial map view of the city of Oxford including parks, the historic University of Oxford (founded 1096), Christ Church Cathedral (built 1160-1200) and other notable landmarks with the university college crests below including Balliol, Merton, Exeter, Oriel, Queen's, New, Lincoln, All Souls, Magdalen, Brasenose, Corpus Christi, Christchurch, Trinity, St John's, Jesus, Wadham, Pembroke, Worcester, Hertford, St Edmund Hall, Keble, St Peter's Hall, Campion Hall, St Benet's Hall, Lady Margaret Hall, Somerville, St Hugh's and St Hilda's. Printed in Great Britain by Jordison and Co Ltd. Horizontal. Large size. Good condition, restored paper losses, restored tears, restored staining, backed on linen.

Fred Taylor
Fred Taylor was one of Britain's leading poster artists between 1908 and the 1940s and is best known for his architectural posters. A Londoner, he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and at Goldsmiths College, where he was awarded a gold medal for posters. A member of The Art Workers' Guild from 1924, Taylor designed many posters for the railway and shipping companies, as well as for the Empire Marketing Board. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, he served during World War II as a naval caumofleur.
