'The Shining' Original Vintage British Quad Film Poster, 1980

About the Item

A scarce and unusual 'Weekend Mirror' style teaser quad for the British release of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 modern horror masterpiece 'The Shining,' starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King, the seminal psychological horror initially opened to mixed reviews, before growing momentum over the summer of 1980 to become an American box-office success. With anticipation building for the October 1980 British release, Warner Bros. made the canny marketing decision to reproduce a tabloid newspaper spread from the Saturday, August 30, 1980, edition of the Daily Mirror, on "the tide of terror that is sweeping throughout America," for their advance British teaser campaign. Despite a demented Nicholson featuring among the striking images in stark black and white, the eye is drawn to the teaser "Coming Soon!" splashed in blood red across the article. Now regarded as one of the most influential horror films in cinema history, key scenes and motifs such as the eerie Grady twins have become ingrained in our popular culture, spawning numerous homages, references and parodies, including an entire sequence in Steven Spielberg''s 2018 sci-fi adventure 'Ready Player One.' Conservation backed on linen in the European style with no restoration whatsoever. Backing has smoothed and diminished one horizontal and three vertical machine folds as issued. A few faint ink smudges to margins and titles. A couple of tiny nicks to upper edge. Whispers of discolouration to edges. Image and colours otherwise excellent.

James Bond 'Goldfinger' Original Vintage British Quad Movie Poster, 1964
Located in Devon, GB
Considered the quintessential and definitive Bond film, the third instalment in EON Productions' James Bond series set the template for many of the subsequent films, with its tongue in cheek humour, extensive use of gadgets and technology and multiple foreign locations. The first Bond blockbuster, 1964's 'Goldfinger' was also the first Bond film to utilise a standalone pre-credits sequence, the first to employ a pop star to sing the theme song and the first to win an Academy Award. The plot saw 007 uncover a plot to contaminate the United States gold reserve at Fort Knox while investigating the smuggling activities of powerful gold magnate Auric Goldfinger. The film's lasting image is of the gold-painted girl, featured here on the sought after 'Style A' British Quad poster for the original UK release in 1964. Robert Brownjohn...

'Maîtresse' Original Vintage Film Poster by Allen Jones, American, 1976
By Allen Jones
Located in Devon, GB
In an early commercial commission, renowned British Pop Artist Allen Jones was asked to design the publicity poster for the 1976 US release of Barbet Schroeder’s 1973 fetish romance 'Maîtresse,' starring a young Gerard Depardieu as the small time crook who stumbles into the double-life of a dominatrix, played by Bulle Ogier. Werner Gallery, who exhibited Jones' original artwork in 2016, stated that 'despite his inability to Identify with its explicit sadomasochistic themes, Jones accepted the poster commission based on his fondness for the powerfully stylized heroine of the film.' Jones' original design, with the high-heeled, leather-clad brunette with bull whip in hand, proved too risqué for the distributor, so the figure was reworked into a blonde beauty gripping a pair of keys instead of the more provocative whip. In 2008, Jones revisited his original design and began developing it into a series of dominatrix paintings...

"The Man with the Golden Arm" Original US Film Poster
By Saul Bass
Located in London, GB
Original US film poster. Saul Bass was born in New York. Bass was a rotund, jovial character. After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones. The following year the director invited the artist to work on The Man With The Golden Arm...
