1532 Hans Weiditz, the Wages of Sin & Fight of Creatures, 2 Master Woodcuts

About the Item

Extremely fine and detail woodcuts executed by Hans Weiditz and issued on the recto and verso of one folio. Two of the most striking and original woodcuts from Weidlitz's series produced for Petrach's Trostspiegel published in 1532. This impression we believe to be the first, without the usual signs of wear and with rich inking. Text to verso Measures: 22.7 x 15.7 cm Neatly mounted. First issue, 1532. Weiditz was not only the most versatile but the busiest of the illustrators of his time... and one of the little group of outstanding woodcut designers of the German Renaissance with a highly individualized style and a most personal outlook on life. More than any of his fellows he knew how to break up the surfaces of his blocks into rich tapestries... and to keep the notation of fact interesting and piquant. Passing by these more technical and aesthetic aspects of his work, we can find unfailing pleasure in the reports of life and manners. He might almost be claimed as the first of the social caricaturists, the first artist who with full command over his printing surface devoted himself to subject matter which in later years was to be so variously handled by such men as Hogarth, Moreau, Chodowiecki, Daumier, and Gavarni, [HANS WEIDITZ: A STUDY IN PERSONALITY, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, W. Production of the Arch of Honor was essentially completed by 1515 but was delayed in release while Maximilian ordered his court historians to add further research into his purported early ancestry. Only a small number of proofs were completed before the emperor’s death, so most of the early printings of complete sets of the Arch were only made and distributed by his grandson Ferdinand I in 1526. Another edition appeared from the Habsburgs in 1559. Woodcut by Albrecht Durer...
