About the Item

Renaissance Dignitary and Noblewoman with Attendant, circa 15th Century This vibrant set of two hand-colored costume plates, taken from the authoritative 1845 edition of Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, illustrates the magnificence and ceremonial splendor of Renaissance society through the elegant portrayal of a high-ranking man and a noblewoman with her attendant. Together, these images capture the opulence and formality that marked court life in Italy during the 15th century. Plate No. 84 features a richly dressed male figure, likely a papal or ducal dignitary. He is attired in a heavily embroidered yellow tunic with intricate foliate patterns, worn beneath a voluminous blue cloak that sweeps dramatically around his figure. The figure’s flowing hair and beard, the ornate gold-trimmed leggings, and especially the papal-style tiara adorned with fleur-de-lis suggest that he may represent a pope or a ceremonial actor portraying such a role. His dynamic stance and expressive hand gesture enhance the sense of public address or ritual procession. Facing this stately figure is Plate No. 85, showing a courtly lady dressed in a vivid orange-red gown, cloaked in a richly brocaded yellow mantle. Her posture is graceful and aristocratic, her gaze soft and modest. Following her is a younger female attendant in a deep crimson and white dress, gently lifting the noblewoman’s train in an image of deference and etiquette. The symbolism of power and service is palpable in the visual relationship between the two figures, making this plate a particularly engaging composition. These prints are not only decorative but educational, offering insight into textile design, social customs, and class distinctions during the Italian Renaissance. The coloration, detail, and clarity of line also make them ideal for collectors of historical costume art or interior decorators seeking a touch of grandeur. Condition Both prints are in very good condition with strong, unfaded color and clear impressions. Some scattered light foxing is visible but does not detract from the image areas. Paper is firm and clean. Framing tips For an impactful display, mount both prints side by side in a single long frame or as a diptych. Use an antique white mat with gold lining to complement the warm hues of the garments. Ornate gold or deep wood frames will further elevate the regal tone, making these prints ideal for hallways, libraries, or study walls where history and elegance meet.
