About the Item

Dominican Preacher with Cross and Book, circa 1400 This evocative costume plate, identified as Plate No. 87 from the 1845 masterpiece Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, presents a compelling portrait of a Dominican friar, captured in mid-gesture as if in the act of a sermon or public address. As with all plates in the series, the artist worked from authentic sources in sculpture and manuscript to recreate historically accurate dress and demeanour, offering collectors and historians a detailed view of ecclesiastical life at the dawn of the 15th century. The figure is dressed in the austere but elegant habit of the Dominican Order, known for its intellectual rigor and prominence as preachers, teachers, and inquisitors throughout medieval Europe. He wears a long white robe covered by a flowing black cappa (cloak), which sweeps dramatically over his shoulder and down his back. His right hand points outward as if addressing a crowd or giving instruction, while in his left arm he cradles a blue-bound book—likely a Bible or breviary—and a golden processional cross. The subtle shading and clean lines of the engraving emphasize both the serenity and determination in his expression. The use of restrained color—mostly cream, black, and soft blue—contrasts with the more flamboyant courtly and military costumes in the series, underlining the spiritual seriousness of the Dominican life. Yet the drama of the pose and the careful treatment of the voluminous fabric grant the figure a strong visual impact. This plate would appeal to collectors of religious iconography, those interested in monastic culture, and decorators seeking refined historical imagery. Condition The print is in almost excellent condition with clean margins, stable paper, and vibrant detailing. The image area is clear, with only minimal aging and very faint foxing near the outer edge. Framing tips To emphasize the spiritual clarity of the image, use a light cream or warm ivory mat with a narrow black or dark wood frame. A gold inner bevel may echo the cross and elevate the ecclesiastical feel. Ideal for display in studies, libraries, or theological institutions, especially when paired with other religious figures from the same series.
