1673 Geese, Nicolas Robert (B.1614), Ornithology, Large Folio Etching

About the Item

Anser; Oye. Nicolas Robert (18 April 1614 – 25 March 1685) Issued in the scarce work: Diverses oyseaux dessignées et gravées d'apres le naturel. Paris, F. Pilly, (1673). Sheet: 36.5 x 24 cm. Later hand color. Nissen, IVB 787; Ronsil 2599; see Bradley Martin 1837. 17th century ornithological engraving from the greatest natural history artist of his age. Nicolas Robert (18 April 1614 – 25 March 1685) was a French miniaturist and engraver. He was born in Langres and died in Paris. The composition of this engraving shows a significant improvement on the vélins that Robert produced for the French King: the subjects are shown within a fully-realized landscape giving it a vivacity that is often lacking from ornithological work where only a single bird or pose is shown.
