About the Item

17th Century Grotesque Ornament – Mythical and Architectural Motifs, Plate LXXIX This richly detailed 19th-century chromolithograph, Plate LXXIX from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, presents a dazzling selection of grotesque ornamentation derived from 17th-century French design. These intricate patterns, originally used in interior decoration, architectural friezes, and furniture design during the Baroque period, are imbued with classical and fantastical motifs rendered in gold, grey, and earthy tones over a warm ochre ground. At the center of the sheet is an elaborate composition featuring symmetrical marine figures—two mermaids or tritons supporting a large medallion with a mythological scene, flanked by horses and crowned by twin putti holding garlands. The image evokes the grandeur and theatricality of Louis XIV interiors, with influences from ancient Roman grotesques, widely revived during the French Baroque era. Surrounding this central tableau are over twenty smaller panels showcasing variations of grotesque ornament: winged cherubs, dolphins, sphinxes, fountains, floral scrolls, satyr heads, urns, and architectural masks. Many of the motifs are presented as symmetrical arabesques or enclosed panels, often used as cartouches or decorative panels in wall schemes, ceilings, or furniture marquetry. This print was lithographed by Dufour et Frosart and published by Firmin-Didot in Paris circa 1869 as part of the monumental design resource compiled by Auguste Racinet. The *L'Ornement Polychrome* series became a key reference for 19th-century architects, artists, and craftsmen seeking to revive and adapt historical ornament in contemporary design. The combination of mythological figures and refined scrollwork reflects the 17th-century fascination with classical antiquity and opulence. For collectors, restorers, or decorative arts enthusiasts, this print offers an invaluable window into the ornamental vocabulary of the Baroque. Condition: Excellent condition. No tears or repairs. Slight age-toning in outer margins. Image area clean with vivid original colors and strong plate impression. Paper remains thick and stable. Framing tips: A gold or dark wooden frame with a neutral mat—light cream, soft ochre, or pale grey—will enhance the classical richness of the design. Ideal for luxurious or historical-themed interiors. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Dufour et Frosart after Racinet, Paris, c.1869
