About the Item

18th-century Botanical Engraving, The Twelve Months of Fruit- July, Engraver: Henry Fletcher for Robert Furber after work by Peter Casteels, Dated 1732. We have five different examples in stock. The framed and matted engraving by Henry Fletcher depicts a grouping of different fruit with a engraved frame. The fruit are listed below and include varieties of Apples, Cherries, Currants, and Strawberries. The engraving is dated July, 1732. Dimensions: Frame: 24 inches high x 21 inches wide. The engraving is within a cream and gold wood frame with a green matte. Robert Furber, one of the best-known plant dealers in London, published Twelve Months of Flowers and Twelve Months of Fruit in 1730 and 1732, respectively. These deluxe sales catalogues, the first ever produced in England, display some 400 flowers and 370 fruits arranged according to the months in which the flowers and fruit bloom or ripen. At least two dozen American plants are pictured, as the flora of the colonies quickly became available in Europe. Henry Fletcher (1710–1750) worked in London, and produced engravings possessing some merit. He most excelled as an engraver of flowers, notably The Twelve Months of Flowers and The Twelve Months of Fruits, engraved from drawings by Pieter Casteels, made in 1730 for a publication by Robert Furber, the well-known gardener. He also engraved some fine plates of birds from drawings by Casteels and Charles Collins. He ordered and received the twelve monthof fruit from London.
