A pioneering figure in a new wave of commercial illustration and graphic arts in the late 1970s and early 1980s in Los Angeles, artist Patrick Nagel is best known for his highly stylized portraits of women depicted in powerful stances with sharp gazes. Drawing on the aesthetics of Art Deco and Pop art, Nagel’s work was influenced by figures from popular culture, including David Bowie and Robert Palmer. He famously contributed illustrations to Playboy magazine, and created the cover art for Duran Duran’s album Rio (1982). Nagel’s paintings and illustrations are characterized by his use of color and his distinctive renderings of a woman’s figure, as seen in his “Commemorative” series from the 1980s. Decades after his death, Nagel’s work continues to be pursued by collectors. In 2020, Nagel’s portrait Jeana (1983) sold for $350,000, setting an auction record for the artist.
