About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Jousting Print: Heraldic Knights Charging in Contest This original hand-coloured lithograph, created in 1842, offers a striking window into the martial pageantry of medieval-inspired tournaments. It is drawn from the acclaimed work *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published by Carl Hoffmann in Stuttgart and enriched by the combined expertise of artist Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and historian Dr. Franz Kottenkamp. Their collaboration sought to faithfully depict the customs, costumes, and symbolic imagery associated with the chivalric age of Europe. In this composition, two armored knights charge towards each other, their lances aligned for impact. Both riders and their horses are lavishly outfitted in heraldic trappings, each piece carefully painted with distinctive patterns, vivid blocks of color, and emblems that hint at noble lineages, family crests, or personal mottos. The horses’ caparisons, with intricate banding and symbolic inscriptions, add layers of narrative and prestige to the scene. The finely executed detailing of the armor’s contours, the subtle shading on the horses’ musculature, and the hand-applied coloring reflect the craftsmanship and artistic standards of the 19th-century lithographer. In terms of condition, this print remains in very good shape for its age. Minor creases and a gentle fold line are visible, consistent with a genuine antique piece. The colors remain remarkably fresh, and the overall clarity is impressive. This lithograph will captivate collectors of historical costume, medieval heraldry, and equestrian-themed art. It provides a vivid connection to a distant era when the clash of lances and the flash of vibrant heraldry defined an aristocratic spectacle.
